Thanks Eu Yan Sang!

Screen shot 2012-09-28 at PM 11.51.16

My treatment with Eu Yan Sang has finally come to an end.
Physician Zhou has given me enough medicine to last me for another two weeks after my last visit to the clinic.
I now do not have to take the medicine daily anymore, but more on a when-I-need-it basis –
so I just need to make a hot mug of drink whenever I am having ‘stiffy’ neck aches.

At my last treatment at Eu Yan Sang, Physician Zhou gave me a combination of treatment of acupuncture and cupping.
I had a really stiff neck that day, probably because of my bad sleeping posture,
and the pain was alleviated immediately after the two treatments!
The acupuncture and cupping was also, as usual, done after a verbal consultation with
the Physician to understand my current state of health.
Physician Zhou also introduced me to a new technique for cupping where it will leave no marks on the body at all!
She heated up the air in the cups, but this time round, instead of leaving the cups on my body,
she dragged them across my problem areas swiftly.
So, no marks at all! It was really understanding and accommodating of her
because I was wearing a singlet that day and had a dinner later that night. :p

For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, this is how cupping looks like:

I was also really glad to hear from Physician Zhou that she thinks I’m looking healthier and less tired than before.
The little tips from her (like wearing more warm clothes that covers my neck area,
and preventing direct exposure to cold air from a fan or air con on my neck) really works. 🙂
Personally, I also felt a change in my general health and the vast improvement in my aches especially on days
when I received treatments and follow the Physicians recommendations on how to improve my daily life or change certain habits.

It has been a good couple of months since I first stepped into Eu Yan Sang and tried Traditional Chinese Medicine for the first time.

I am also proud to be one of the patrons of a network of clinic that gives back to society through various ways!

For those of you who haven’t heard, Eu Yan Sang TCM Clinic’s adopted charity is Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society (THK).
There are donation boxes at all Eu Yan Sang clinics to collect donations from people
who would like to contribute to help the needy too.
To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Eu Yan Sang Clinics is raising funds through various fundraising activities.
Besides the donation boxes, you can also get a special red commemorative THK-EYS umbrella for S$10,
from which proceeds will go to THK.

Eu Yan Sang sure have come a long way since the opening of their first clinic in Singapore in 2002.
Over the 10 years, they have opened many clinics in various parts of Singapore
and now also have a clinic in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (and I’m happy because that’s super near my house haha)!
There is a Child-Friendly Clinic in Sembawang too! So cute right. :p

I was also featured in one of the episodes of 纵横中医 (that has already started airing by the way!) on Channel 8
to showcase my experience with TCM and how it has took care of my persistent neck aches and other sub-health ailments.
It was really fun working with the crew too!
First time in my life I have people coming to my house to film me in my bedroom. Haha! Cheap thrill.
The show will be screening every Sat, 930pm on channel 8 all the way until 27th October
and some of the topics discussed are menopausal symptoms, sub-fertility, TCM weight management,
pain management, high blood pressure and more.
So do remember to catch it if you know if anyone who might need help from TCM.
The episode featuring me will air tomorrow (!!), 29 Sep.
Do tune in and watch me share my story with TCM if you’re in the mood for TV!
It would be like a summary for all my blog posts so far! :p
I’ll be happy to answer any of your questions about my TCM experience too.

There is also a weekly contest going on at the microsite that you can check out!
They are giving away Eu Yan Sang goodie packs worth more than $32!
All you need to do is to answer a really, really simple question based on this post.

That’s all from me! Let me know or leave a comment if you have any thoughts about TCM to share too! 🙂

Haunted Hotels 101

I was on Facebook the other day and I came across this article that states a whole list of things
one should do before one enter a hotel room.
I got a little spooked out and recalled of all the weird rules my Mom once told me about hotel rooms.
How you place your shoes, should you put stuff on the empty bed next to you if you’re staying alone,
should you off all the lights, and many many more.

So out of curiosity, I went to Google about haunted hotels and the do’s and don’ts when it comes to hotel rooms.
It’s pretty interesting so I decided to come here and spook all of you out too!
I hope you are reading this late at night, preferably in a hotel room.
(Hehe. Kidding!)

Screen shot 2012-09-26 at AM 03.46.24

i. Knock the door before you enter the room
You can even ring the room bell if you want.
This is said to “inform” the spirits that you are about to enter the room.
It’s a polite gesture so the spirits might not feel offended if you just barge into their room.

ii. Flush the toilet as soon as you enter the room
This is say to flush away all bad things.

iii. Cover the mirrors in the bedroom
Remember to cover the mirrors when you are sleeping.
This is to ensure that they are not staring back at you from the other end.

iv. Make sure your shoes are both in opposite faces.
Eg, one half of the shoe faces up, the other half faces down.
This is to have the yin and yang effect. A natural balance in the room.

v. Don’t leave the bed unattended (Double bed rooms)
This only applies if you are not occupying the other bed.
Make sure you put things on the bed.
This is to ensure you are not inviting any invisible vistors to spend the night in your room.

vi. Leave the bathroom lights on at all times
Spirits like to hang around at damp and dark places and
your bathroom would seem inviting if the rest of the room has lights on.
By switching the lights on, spirits might probably find your room inhabitable.

vii. Always request for double bedroom
This only applies to those traveling alone.
It’s said that by ordering another bed, you would not face a situation
where the spirit might just be sleeping next to you as you can’t even occupy the whole queen sized bed by yourself.

viii. Say “NO” to rooms near exits
They say that rooms that are next to exit (emergency) areas usually attract more spirits than other rooms.
Why? It’s because of the lonely and deserted stairway that attracts these spirits.
And because they travel through walls easily, they tend to linger at the next room just to disturb the unfortunate inhabitant.

ix. Bibles in the room
The Bibles in the room are not meant for reading.
If you find that the bible in your room is left opened in the drawer, request for a change of rooms.

Screen shot 2012-09-26 at AM 03.48.13

There are often many “stunts” that ghosts like to do in horror movies.
How to make sure that the room is haunted and it’s not just you being over-suspicious worrywart?

Rapping on the Walls
This can be caused by a ghost trying to get your attention or by loud plumbing in the walls.
Check with management to see if there are any known plumbing problems in your room or on your floor.

Footsteps
Check the hallway to make sure someone is not walking by or listen
to ensure it is not coming from the occupants in an adjoining room.
If you see no one, you should request for a change of room if you’re smart.

Things Being Moved
Many times when a spirit wants attention it will take small items, such as jewelry, keys or even cell phones
and move them to another location.
Make note before leaving the room where you left these items and ensure that
it was not housekeeping moving things around to clean.

Lights Turning On and Off
Check with the front desk for any known electrical problems or area power surges before you panic.

Doors Slamming Shut with No One Around
Check for drafts and loose door hinges, which may cause the door to close on its own.

Shadows
Check to make sure that no one is walking around outside your room’s window or
the exterior light is not casting shadows from passers-by or cars.

Touched
Make sure that it is not your clothing, hair or something in the room that you may have brushed up against.
If it’s not, scream and run out of your room. And don’t look back! Haha.

Voices
Check to make sure it is not from the other room, in the hallway or outside of your room’s window.

I also came across this article that spoke about the top 5 haunted hotels in Asia.
Good to take note for all you frequent travellers, I guess!

Screen shot 2012-09-26 at AM 04.05.35

Yu Shan Fan Dian, Chengde, China
The 220-room hotel Yu Shan Fan Dian is three hours north of Beijing on the Yangtze River.
As legend has it, the ghost of the Empress Dowager Cixi is omnipresent on the hotel grounds and in the halls.
The place where the hotel was built was once Qing Dynasty property, you see,
so the old Dowager feels duly protective of her garden.

Screen shot 2012-09-26 at AM 04.06.01

Asia Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand
At first glance, it is easy to write off the Asia Hotel in Bangkok as spooky.
The corridors are dimly lit and rooms quite old and musty. Lights flicker on and off in the dead of night.
A typical story involves guests waking up just in time to see ghostly figures sitting on the sofa staring at them,
only to vanish into thin air.

Screen shot 2012-09-26 at AM 04.06.42

The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, India
The Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai is haunted by the ghost of W. A. Chambers, the hotel’s chief engineer.
Chambers travelled to France shortly before the hotel’s completion.
He later returned to India only to find out that it was built in the opposite direction. (WTF!)
He was so heartbroken that he took his life.
Hotel staff and guests claim that his ghost roams the old wing of the hotel obviously still lamenting his design gone bad.

Screen shot 2012-09-26 at AM 04.07.12

First World Hotel, Genting Highlands, Malaysia
Genting Highlands, the famous hill resort in Malaysia, is also known as one of the most haunted places in Malaysia.
Paranormal incidents have been reported at the First World Hotel.
Given that it is a casino resort, a lot of gambling-related suicides have happened over the years.
There are eerie sounds in the middle of the night as well as apparitions of restless spirits.
Locals even claim that some hotel rooms are never rented out even if the hotel is fully booked
because occupants fall sick after their stay.

Screen shot 2012-09-26 at AM 04.07.43

Grand Hyatt, Taipei, Taiwan
Ghost stories about the Grand Hyatt Taipei are rooted in the hotel’s dark history.
Apparently the hotel was built on a World War II prison camp where hundreds of people were incarcerated and
eventually put to death.
Guests of the hotel have allegedly seen ghosts in the corridors while others have heard strange noises from unoccupied rooms. Paranormal activities and rumors regarding the hotel have so negatively affected the business
that management decided to consult Feng Shui experts.
Chinese calligraphy and scrolls have since been installed in strategic places within the hotel
in the hopes of warding off restless spirits.

I hope you are slightly spooked out too because I’m quite spooked out doing all the research at 4am. :p

We would bring a huge piece of gingerbread in our bags everyday.

Paris I

It was one of my greatest wish to travel to Europe when I was in university.
I was always green with envy when I hear friends travelling to Europe for their graduation trips etc.
In a nutshell, I just really wanted to go check out Europe for myself, and Paris in particular,
is one of the cities I am dying to visit.
Other than the world renowned Eiffel Tower, Montmartre in Paris is also on my bucket list.

A and I didn’t make it to Montmartre on our previous trip because our trip was cut short due to unforeseen circumstances.
But this time round, we finally made it there!
Montmartre! The place where Amélie Poulain lived and worked in! *beams*

Screen shot 2012-09-25 at AM 03.41.57

We got our apartment from a Bed&Breakfast website and it is just couple stops away from the main Montmartre area.
We picked the location because it was near the flea markets and we both loved flea markets!
And according to the research we did, the area we stayed at has the biggest flea market in the whole of Europe!

The excited A and I woke up nice and early on our first day in Montmartre! 😀

P1015974

I’m wearing my new top from Runway Bandits!
Totally loving this blue top (which reminds me of the SCGS uniform btw) and the quality is superb!
I insisted on just wearing this out although it was pretty chilly. Typical 爱水麦命! Hahaha.

The walk to the flea markets was really fun!
Cafes, local schools and some little cute restaurants.
The area we lived in has quite a number of immigrants so it is pretty interesting to see another side of Paris.
Very different from the glam and lavish Paris we were used to during our last trip.
The area was quite cheap and there are lots of supermarkets all around.
The things here are significantly cheaper than town area too. Good for us pauper-style travellers. Heh!

P1016014

The flea markets has so much to offer and so many things to see!
But it is quite different from how we envisioned it before we got there.
So we ended the flea market tour earlier than expected and headed straight to Montmartre! *thrilled*
We took a train to Pigalle station which is just a couple stops away.

P1016015

P1016016

The whole Montmartre area is on a hill so there are slopes all around.
But it’s really pretty! And we regretted not staying in this area immediately as soon as we set eyes on Montmartre!
We did our homework and had a printout of the route to take for a walking tour around the Montmartre area.
And A is our tour guide of the day! *applause*

P1016018

And I wore my terribly crumpled top in the very beautiful Montmartre.

Munich | Austria

It came as a little surprise when I was told that we would be crossing the borders and heading over to Salzburg, Austria!
The first place we came to was Mirabell Garden where the film Sound of Music was filmed in the 60s.
Quite sadly, my childhood was quite ching chong so I didn’t watch the show when I was younger.
But I do remember snippets of the show, especially those classic scenes from videos I’ve watched over the years.

Here are some pictures of the beautiful Mirabell Garden!

Big thank you to Runway Bandits for the lovely yellow blazer! ❤

The highlight of the day, however, has got to be the trip to visit Dachau Concentration Camp back in Munich.
I have always had a deep interest in WWII and strangely I have a penchant for camps or museums related to such stuff.
I had high expectations for the Dachau Concentration Camp before I went there.
But I think they cleaned up the place pretty well and the entire place felt more peaceful than creepy.

That said, I still think the whole history about these concentration camps and all the torturing that took place in them
is too cruel and appalling.
Hopefully we will not let such things happen again.

P1015883

This reminds me of this movie I watched called “The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas”, it was from a book of the same title.
It is a Holocaust film that explores the horror of a World War II extermination camp through the eyes of two 8-year-old boys;
one the son of the camp’s Nazi commandant, the other a Jewish inmate.

If you haven’t watched this show before, please do.
I managed to find the full movie on Youtube!
Here is Part 1. Thank me later! 🙂

This room is the shower room where the prisoners were all stripped naked, hair shaved, and made to shower together.
Towards the end, this is also made into a place to torture prisoners with extremely hot or cold water.

P1015884

If you look closely, you will be able to see the yellow streak on the ceiling where the pipes used to be.

P1015885

There were also a few standees around the room that showed pictures taken back
during the times when the camps were still in use.
After standing in front of the standees for a while, I realized that the pictures there were all taken at the spot where
the standees were placed.
It creeped me out a little, but it was really sad to imagine how all these people used to be humiliated,
insulted and treated with such unjust in this room.

P1015887

These poles were once used to hang bodies.

P1015891

Now we can only see this structure here to remind us of all the people who lost their lives there.

P1015890

We also visited the bunks for the prisoners.
They were all re-constructed to model after how the rooms used to look like.
The beds used to be bigger until the camp got too overcrowded.
According to the guide, there were about more than 300 prisoners
kept in one room (about the size of our classroom) towards the end.

Today, the barracks were all demolished, leaving only numbered stones to mark where they once stood.

The gas chambers and furnaces.
This is not in the main premises of the camp, but well hidden behind the woods.
Prisoners were made to bring fellow inmates to the gas chambers and made to get rid of their bodies after they were gassed.
Many of the prisoners who were there did not even know about the gas chambers when they were there.

I heard many stories from friends who visited other concentration camps in Poland, etc.
Some said there were heaps of clothes from prisoners, heaps of hair taken from prisoners.
And about how their hair were all taken to be woven into clothes because there was a lack of resources back then.

Although the entire area in Dachau Concentration Camp was cleaned up pretty well.
Walking through the entire camp through the main gates, to the shower rooms, to the barracks and finally to the gas chambers
certainly makes me imagine how horrifying it must be for the prisoners who were once here.
Let’s hope history will not repeat itself.

Munich I

I am finally back from the days of being internet-less!
This Europe trip felt really different from the previous one but it was just as good if not better.
It was a rather last-minute decision because it was actually A’s company retreat getaway trip.
They were going to Munich and she thought it would be great if we could tag along,
and leave Munich on our own to finish off what we missed out from our previous Europe trip.

We came back about a week in advance from our previous trip there because of my grandmother’s demise.
And it felt like we have came one full circle after we finally finished up what we set out to do in the first place.

We visited Munich, Austria (for a day), Paris and Barcelona this time round.
I must say I am very proud that we managed to spend very little on this trip (muahaha!).
I am really poor now. REALLY POOR! Need to start working my ass off again!

Nuff of whining! 😀
Here are some pictures we took in Munich!

Screen shot 2012-09-20 at AM 05.38.55

We were with a tour group for the Munich trip so everything was pretty planned out for us.
I love and hate going on tours because everything is so pre-planned. I love and hate it for the same reason.
I don’t know much about Germany before I went there.
The few things I knew about Germany was pork knuckles, beer and Adolf Hitler.
Gladly, during the short span of 4 days in Germany, I learnt more about the three mentioned above,
and a little bit more about what this cool country has to offer.

P1015449

P1015451

Everything was pretty much a blur when we first got there.
A and I were suffering from SERIOUS lack of sleep because we spent the last couple days rushing out tons of tiramisu orders.
The long flight didn’t make it any better.
And to top it off, I had an eye stye in my right eye.
So you won’t be seeing much pictures of me in this post because I don’t want to scare you away.

The pictures of the stadium you see above is supposedly one of their big and pretty stadiums where they hold soccer games.
I’m not a big fan of soccer and my only knowledge about German footballers is about a certain Michael Ballack and
one of their goalkeepers called Kahn because his name sounds like C*** and is too funky.

Then we headed over to the second “photo stop” – some castle, of some sort.

P1015471

P1015473

The main stars at this photo stop were actually the swans there.
The Germans seem to like their swans a lot.
It was pretty nice because the suagu me have actually never seen a swan so upclose before.
(Don’t ask me why I didn’t go Jurong Bird Park)

P1015476

Look at the swan’s ugly kids in the background :p
So glad swans are not one of those superficial animals who would kill their kids because they are ugly.
(Please forgive me for talking gibberish.
It’s 6.15am and my body doesn’t know whether it’s on Europe time or Singapore time now)

P1015479

Strangely, the hotels in Munich only check their guests in at 4pm so we had a lot of time to kill before we could settle down.
So the guides brought the whole bunch of tired, jetlag tourists to the main shopping city centre.
I have to admit the sight of beer gardens everywhere thrilled me tremendously.

I cannot believe their beer houses are so damn gorgeous!
Some of the patrons here even have lockers where they can keep their personal beer steins.
And these lockers are not things that money can buy – they have to be super regulars to even stand a chance to own one.
And when one wants to give up the locker, he/she gets to pick who is the next person to take over the locker.
Interesting uh!

After checking in at the hotel (FINALLY!), we got change and went for a welcome dinner at BMW Welt.
I never knew Germany is such a superpower country when it comes to manufacturing of luxury cars.

This is the damn showroom.
Apparently, after you’ve purchased your car, you can drive it out from the showroom directly!

The following day, we visited the Neuschwanstein Castle (I had to google to get the spelling right).
It is almost a tongue twister to pronounce the name of this place accurately.
I know you are trying to pronounce now. Give it up already. Haha.

It looks like a really pretty place from the postcards we see all over the place.

P1015677

According to our guide, the outlook of this castle was so charming that its design is actually the basis for most of the designs of castles Disney has!
We were really excited about it but it was really foggy when we got up there so this is what we saw.

(In my opinion at least)
You can check out the costumes here.
Maybe some of you might be wondering about the same thing I did – how do we wash these leather pants?
Apparently, the pants in the male’s costume is made of leather and the pants is never ever washed.
The dirtier and more worn it gets, the “cooler” it is.

(OMG TIME TO SLEEP!)

Eu Yan Sang II

After my visits to Eu Yan Sang for regular checks and acupuncture sessions,
I have had many friends asking me whether TCM works and how the whole acupuncture experience is like.
I guess it is still common how a lot of young people still have misconceptions when it comes to traditional Chinese medicine,
so I’ve decided to do a little report on my progress so far!

Screen shot 2012-08-28 at PM 02.18.46

So far, I have tried traditional Chinese medicine that comes in powder form and had two acupuncture sessions!
Immediate results were obvious.
I drift into sleep much faster these days and it is exceptionally evident on days I received acupuncture treatments.
Although neck aches did not disappear immediately, the intensity of the pain has decreased.
The little health tips from Physician Zhou on how to relax my neck and shoulders have
helped me improve my general health condition too!

Apart from that, I also made some changes to my lifestyle to speed up the recovery process.
I try to cut down on wearing clothes that expose my neck and shoulders, especially in air-conditioned rooms.
Getting adequate sleep is also very crucial because according to TCM,
11pm to 1am is the time when the Yin and Yang energy transition in our body takes place,
so it’s the best time for the Yin and Yang energy to regain self-balance.
That was really interesting too because I always thought as long as we get 8 hours of sleep daily,
it doesn’t matter what time we get to bed. Myth busted! Heh.

I am very impressed with Physician Zhou’s knowledge about our body too.
Before I visited a Chinese physician, I always thought it’s good to drink herbal tea.
If we feel a little under the weather, we are probably “heaty” and should go get some herbal tea.
(Well, that’s what my Mom has been telling me since young)
But according to Physician Zhou, my body is considered “cool”, so too much herbal tea would not be good for me.
I told my Mom about what I learnt after my clinic visit and she went “Ohhh.” Hahaha!

After 2 months of trying TCM, my conditions seem to be getting better.
The aches would normally be aggravated if I keep late nights or bend my neck to do my work for prolonged periods of time.
She has advised me to try to do some simple neck exercises or put a warm towel over my neck to relax the muscles
if I have to work on my computer for a longer period of time.
I have been trying to keep a more balanced lifestyle and not be in front of the computer for too long a period of time,
but I guess I still have to try harder! 😡

Apart from neck aches, a couple other friends had also asked for my experiences and
went ahead to try TCM to solve their own sub-health ailments.
One of them had migraine, and I hope TCM has also helped her with her problem.
Just so you know, some of the many other conditions that can be treated by TCM include pain management, arthritis,
asthma, mild depression, sub-fertility, jet lag relief, stroke, weight management and many other pediatric diseases.
I never knew TCM could help treat so many conditions!
Most importantly, I think trying TCM out is really more of a lifestyle change rather than a treatment.

Like some of you might already know, I have been visiting the Eu Yan Sang clinic at Camden Medical Centre for the last two months.
And after my treatment, I have became extra sensitive to spotting other Eu Yan Sang branches in Singapore.
There are SO many! Here is a list of the clinics.
It’s funny how I never really noticed them before in the past!

Now for something more exciting – as part an upcoming health program “纵横中医”,
I will be appearing on the show to talk more about my sub-health conditions and
hopefully it can help others with the similar problem. We are done with the shooting and my episode will be coming up in September.

I hope my Mandarin is OK in the interview.
My episode will be airing on 29th September on Channel 8 from 9.30pm to 10pm.
This series will start airing from 25th August onwards until 27th October.
Don’t forget to catch fellow blogger Jessica on the show too!

Heh! It is the 10th anniversary for Eu Yan Sang Clinics!
It’s really cool when I went to Google their website and see their major milestones.
One that caught my attention was how they started home delivery service in 2009
where they deliver herbal prescriptions for existing patients all over Singapore! Which other clinic does that!
I didn’t know there is a premier clinic in Paragon that was started in September 2008
which treats referred patients from KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital too!

New update! I also tried cupping yesterday! It was a really interesting feeling and I’m surprised how painless it is.
It just feels very tight and warm – quite a nice sensation if you ask me.

The physician recommended cupping.
It applies acupressure by creating a vacuum in the cups,
which is why there are round marks on my body after the cups are removed.
Cupping is a way of treating ailments caused by local congestions;
these cups are placed along the meridian points so that they can help boost immunity and other modalities!

If you haven’t heard of cupping before, this is how it’s done.
The physician will heat up the air inside of the cup with a small flame.
After placing the cup over your skin, the air inside the cup cools down and contracts, drawing skin slightly inside the cup.
I didn’t feel any heat at all, just in case you’re wondering.
So not to worry! The red marks left behind are just slight bruising of the skin, and it goes away after two to three days.

At first, I was a little worried about the red marks on my back too because I was afraid that they would look unsightly
when I wear clothes that reveal my back.
But fortunately, the marks are not too red and they fade away within a couple of days.

After the cupping, I feel that my body has “loosen up” – almost like the cups has sucked all my stress away.
Amazingly, I didn’t feel any pain or aches in my neck and shoulders area for the rest of the day!
That’s really rare for me!

Screen shot 2012-08-28 at PM 02.19.45

This is how my back looks like immediately after the cups are removed.

Screen shot 2012-08-28 at PM 02.19.58

During my visit, I also saw the donation box for Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society! I also made a small donation.
I’m sure the money will go to do good things for the less fortunate!
Eu Yan Sang Clinics also will top up an additional 10% of the total sum collected. Isn’t it great?

Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society is adopted by Eu Yan Sang Clinics as part of their 10th anniversary celebrations.
So these donation boxes are just part of the plans to raise funds for Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society.
These boxes will be in all clinics islandwide until the end of the year.
If you want to know where are these clinics located,
here is a link for you to check out their addresses!

The next time you drop by a Eu Yan Sang Clinic and see one of these donation boxes,
don’t forget to do your part and give back to society! 🙂

Last chance

IMG_6122

I’m tired.

Not jaded, not sick of something I’m doing,
but just pure fatigue because of all the constant lack of sleep every night.
It is almost 6am and I am just done with my shower.
I’m dying to hit the bed but the bugging urge to update my blog has driven me to sit before the laptop again.

The Tiramisu Hero is 20 days old as of today.
Even though we are this young, I am very happy to have created something I am proud of with A.
As I was talking to A about The Tiramisu Hero this afternoon,
I suddenly realized that this is actually one of the biggest thing I have set out to do.
And it somehow feels like a “last chance”.
I don’t know if you know what I mean by “last chance”, but I hope you do.

I want to break out of the cycle.
I don’t want to be doing something I dread.
I don’t want to be working my ass off to make money for another person sitting in the bigger office.

I am 27 years old this year and I cannot help but feel unaccomplished at many times.
This feeling is exceptionally evident when I see how peers of similar ages are all in high-paying jobs,
buying their first house, or having their own businesses.
I am never someone with a high self esteem.
And I remember how my ex used to tell me that I need to have higher aspirations.

But what is enough?
I guess it’s different for everybody.
Some want a big car, a big house, big careers.
Some want fame, popularity and lots of money.
I have dreams and aspirations too. I just don’t know how to make them happen.
And as I grow older, I see those dreams getting fainter and fainter.
I just want to be happy; have a place of my own where I can spend time with the people I love,
and have sufficient to lead an average life.
Really don’t see a point in doing something that brings in the money but leaves me with no time for the people around me.

As I typed that last sentence, I felt guilty.
Because I haven’t been home for the last couple of days and I feel really bad about it.
I have been swarmed with work this last few weeks and it really leaves me with no time for anything else.
A and I get about an average of 2 to 5 hours of sleep every night.
We work the moment we get up, all the way until the wee hours.
You might think it’s ridiculous.
I think, too, that it’s ridiculous how we have so much to do too, but I guess creating something from nothing really needs a lot of work.
I look like crap half the time and constantly have aching legs because of all the standing and walking around.
We are the boss, the marketeers, the logistic officers, the operations managers, the chefs, the cleaners, the delivery girls.
And it really leaves us with no time for ourselves, not to mention our family.

My Mom texted me two days back and asked me why I haven’t been home for so long.
“Even people with big businesses go home at the end of the day,” she said.
After reading her text, I cried.
Because I felt misunderstood and I wish she could see what I am doing every single day.
I want to do something that will make her proud of me.
She had always been very supportive of me and this little business venture,
and I hope she can continue to lend me her support.

I hate growing up.
I remember how I used to envy how Mom has lots of mail in the letterbox, and I always wished I had many many mails too.
My goodness. I wish those mails and bills won’t come now!
There is always this immense amount of stress every time I think about my future.
No, I don’t have a rich dad. And I am not some talented smarty pants which every big corporation wants to hire.
What does the future holds? Where will I be one decade later?
It scares me to even think about it.

I think I forgot what had happened to me in the last 5 years.
The last time I checked, I think I was only 22.
The last couple of years just whizzed by like that and I didn’t even realize how fast time went by
until I sat myself down and see what I had done in life so far.

Time is brutal indeed.
I hope it’s not too late to give it one last shot and have my “last chance” to break out of the cycle.

I’m back!

My apologies for my disappearance.
I have been OVERWHELMED with work recently, doing tiramisu all day all night,
smelling like coffee and creme half the time!

I am very lucky to have supportive readers (like you!) and friends who continuously encourage me and support my new venture.
THANK YOU!

Hahaha!
But it is really a very accomplished feeling to see everyone nom-ing on the tiramisu A and I prepared with love!

So I took the chance to take some pictures with my love!

A and I have been mad busy with everything from buying of ingredients, delivery, making tiramisu, etc.
We hardly even have much time to rest properly at night now.
Like what A says, you know you are too busy when your eyebrows are all getting out of shape
and your nails are looking long and abandoned. Hahaha!
But it really feels different when you are slogging and working for something of our own!
Now I understand how hard it is to start something from scratch.

We are currently looking at building a little kitchen somewhere so we can improve and serve more tiramisu!
Tiring but very exciting journey!
I loved visiting cafes and checking out new food haunts, and it is my dream to have my very own cafe someday.
I used to brag to A about how MY cafe would definitely exude class and my personality in its decor.
HAHAHA. I know I’m very shameless.
But it’s not easy to set up not just a cafe, but any establishments in Singapore.
(No moolah!!)
So I shall have that as a goal and hopefully we will get there one day!

For the time being, I will just doodle on the window and convert A’s bedroom into an office space. :p

That said, we might need to get a few friendly helpers to help us make tiramisu soon,
if you MIGHT be interested, drop me an email at sixpegs@gmail.com ok!

I guess the most exciting event for this week would be a photoshoot for Dove’s new Hair Fall Rescue range!
I headed down to SPH Magazine’s office for the shoot and saw Beatrice and Silver there.
(Missed Jayne because she was there at another photoshoot session)

Speaking of which, I really need a haircut because my hair looked ridiculously 1980s in the photos.

Saveur

A and I checked out this little cafe called Saveur on Sunday night.
We heard raves about the good food and low prices of the French food served at this cafe,
and also saw pictures of pretty food from my friend Cheryl’s Instagram,
so we decided to go take a look for ourselves!

I read about how Saveur used to be a kopitiam stall and after they moved to their new location,
standard of comfort, ambience, location went up, but the prices remained the same!

It was quite a big place and it was packed when we arrived.
They have two units along Purvis Road but they only opened one side of the cafe.
It was still very cosy though!
We were also very excited because there are alot of other yummy “kopitiam” style food along Purvis Street!

I like the drawing on the wall too. Very cute!

Look how it’s packed to the brim!
I don’t really like how the tables are really close to each other though.
The people at the next table just need to look over and they can see our pores.

IMG_5900

We order bread and butter and it was quite bad.
We also ordered mushroom soup that came in a little coffee cup.
The soup is really frothy and it’s quite interesting!
We were a little shocked at the size of the soup though.
But I guess the serving size of the food here matches the prices.

And sorry, we finished the soup before I realized I should take some pictures first. Haha!

IMG_5903

I had a prawn and caviar angel hair pasta!
The presentation is gorgeous! But the serving size is really small.
I heard the woman at the next table saying “好像吃不饱” too. Hahahaha!

Just look at the size of the spoon VS amount of pasta.

Sorry, no pictures of me eating again.
I was starving! Heh!

IMG_5906

But the most disappointing dish of all has got to be what A ordered.
This is roast pork with some beans thing with POACHED egg.
I have never seen a poached egg that looks like that.

This is poached egg.

THIS is half boiled egg.

We (obviously) still had a lot of space for desserts but didn’t want to have anymore food there 😦
I guess Saveur is still pretty value for money, and this cafe is really cozy, bright and clean!
A and I are quite picky when it comes to food.
But I’m sure Saveur has such good reviews for a good reason.
Do check it out and see if the food is to your liking if you fancy French food!

We didn’t have desserts at Saveur but A made me the prettiest birthday cake I have ever had!
It was my birthday on Monday and silly A crept into the room at midnight to give me this.

LOVE!

Bread with my favourite Haagen Daaz Vanilla ice cream and Glucolin with bananas and strawberries!
Thanks baby for the yummy (very) homemade birthday cake! ❤

I guess as you get older, the simpler you want your birthdays to be.
Especially me, because I have a feeling that I am aging at an alarming rate. Hahaha!

A woke up early and made me mee suah with egg for breakfast!

IMG_5914

We launched The Tiramisu Hero‘s website on my birthday too!
The orders started rolling in like 20 minutes after we lived the website,
so I spent the entire day doing tiramisu.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who checked out our website or LIKED our Facebook Page!
BIG THANKS to those who gave their support and placed orders too!
I IS LOVE YOU! ❤

We also came up with this little thing where we can help convey messages with our tiramisu via handwritten notes!
Cute right cute right!

A want to be mysterious too and she said she want to bring me to “somewhere new”
for a nice birthday dinner after a long day at work.
We popped by The Cliff at The Sentosa for a yummy dinner!

The food was REALLY, REALLY, REALLY fucking good!
Even the bread with olive oil was awesome.
There was a choice of 4 different types of bread.
The olive oil was fab! And they served it with some curry-flavoured powder too.
Delectable!

It was a really quiet and enjoyable dinner.
THANK YOU AILEEN KOH! Hahaha.
I love you!

And here is the address if you want to try The Cliff out too.
The food is REALLY so good!!

We went back to A’s place and immediately switched back to Tiramisu Auntie mode.
A’s Mommy made a cheesecake for my birthday too! Very love. Hurhurhur.

IMG_5927

Hahaha I know the decor is a little retarded.
A and me designed it. Hahaha!!

Here are also some pictures of me celebrating birthday with my family.
My Dad also share the same birth date as me!
I AM MY DADDY’s BIGGEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT! Hahahaha.
I’m so glad my family liked the tiramisu cake A and I made too!
It is the first time I made a cake for Dad too. ❤

Mommy look so pretty.
Can I be like her when I grow up? :p

IMG_5930

Oh! I also want to share this very exciting pack of goodies I got from Oh! That Shop.
It is totally god sent because I just welcomed quite a few pairs of new shoes,
and we all know not all pretty shoes are comfortable to be in.

Thank God for Oh! That Shop, I now have a lot more shoe accessories to fix all my shoes woes!

Screen shot 2012-07-31 at AM 01.38.07

I am so excited about the shoe stretcher!
My Mom used to tell me to bite my new shoes so they won’t “bite” me.
Now I can introduce this thing to her so we don’t have to bite our shoes anymore. Hahaha!
It was my first time seeing the bunion toe spreader too.
I think the most lethal pair of stilettos can be very comfortable now. Wee!
They have a lot many other products that are damn amazing! Go take a look too OK!

Thanks for dropping by my blog today!
Will be back with more updates. Meanwhile, let’s eat tiramisu!
Heh.
